A news article reports that of the 411 players on National Basketball Association rosters in Feb 1998, only 139 made more than the league average salary of 2.36 million. Is 2.36 million the mean or median salary for NBA players? How do you know?

Technically in statistics both the mean and the median (and mode) can be considered measurements of the 'average'.
In this example, however, We know that it is not median because then 205 would have had to have made more than than the average (because the median is the middle number it would need 205 players on either side).
